Structural Mezzanine Floors and Industrial Steel Shelving

Mezzanine Floors

A steel mezzanine floor is where the structure as well as the surface deck is made of steel. You can get closed or solid steel decking such as checker plate or 'Vastrap' decking or just plain steel sheets. Then there is the open grid and grating deck which allows for better airflow and light distribution.
There are various types of steel decking available namely the non-slip checker plate steel deck or ‘Vastrap’ which comes in sheet sizes of 1200 x 2500 and various thicknesses depending on the joists spacing’s and the carrying capacity. You can also use the plain steel decking of similar size which is preferable when using a pallet jack on the mezzanine. This type of steel decking would be used in high risk fire areas where timber is not an option. It is also preferred for external or wet areas where the deck could also be galvanized. An even more durable option…
Another type of steel deck is the open grid steel decking which is a rolled and punched c- channel shape bolted together to form a rigid perforated deck. Due to the shape of the steel decking profile, it is possible to span the joists further apart than when using the checker plate decking. This in turn allows you to save on the use of joists thereby reducing the overall cost. The joist spacing also depends on the carrying capacity. This steel open deck system is useful when using a sprinkler system for fire proofing in your building as only one…
The most durable type of industrial steel decking is the steel grating deck. This is normally hot dipped galvanized and can also be banded after cutting to size. By banding the deck you add a steel flat bar ‘border’ which rounds it off neatly although it is not necessary for the structural integrity of the deck. The full size of this steel grating deck comes in a standard size of 1200 x 2400 but can be cut to any size from there. The joist spacing’s are also further apart in this system depending on carrying capacity. This galvanized deck is…
This combination steel and timber floor is our most common type of mezzanine floor construction. The main supporting structure is steel with a timber deck. We generally use square tube columns with I-beam or universal bearer beams and lip channel joists. The timber deck can be either pine shutter ply decking or pine tongue in groove decking. The entire staircase is also steel with steel checker plate treads. Our standard galvanized industrial hand and knee rail is most commonly used. There are some variations to this steel and timber mezzanine floor design; for example, we can use H-beams as columns. …
